The STAR method is a way to tell a story during your job interview in an organized manner. It stands for situation, task, action, and result. When it comes to discussing something you are most proud of, you can utilize this method to formulate a thoughtful, well-articulated answer.

First, you want to discuss the situation. Was it a team effort or something with a manager?

Second, what part of the task where you personally responsible for? Think about what you contributed and how it made an impact.

Third, what exact action did you take to help affect the outcome of the situation? Be specific in what you did.

Finally, what results came from your actions and decisions?

By using STAR, you can tell a story in a concise way that the hiring manager will be able to follow. Explain the details of each action you took that led to your proudest moment. Show the interviewer how this has made you a better employee. Next, find a way to tie your greatest accomplishment to the job you are interviewing for. One of the greatest answers candidates give is the one that shows the interviewer you have what it takes to get the job done.

Perfecting your answer

One of the best things we can tell you to do is practice your answer. This way, when it comes time to answer under pressure, you will be ready. Not every company will ask it but it's always better to be prepared.

Next, share your answer with a friend or mentor. Ask if they think it will work well. Use the feedback you are given to adjust your answer. One or two tips from different people can go a long way. Everyone responds differently, so if possible, run your answer by more than one person.

A family member can also help if you don't have a lot of professional experience. As you prepare for common interview questions, make a list of potential answers. You can share an example or two to figure out the best answer. Role-playing is also a good idea when preparing for a job interview.

Keep it professional and personal

Trying to come up with the thing you are most proud of on the spot can be difficult. That's why it's a great idea to practice your answer beforehand. You want it to be something from your past that will show the company you are the right person for the open role.

Learn as much as you can about the job you are applying for and the goals that will be essential for the role. Plan your answer in a way that touches on the job description. See if you can say something that shows you know what they are looking for.
